Student Council
It’s campaign season at The Summit! Although only a week long, this time has students active and motivated to learn about leadership and power. Additionally, it’s been a fantastic season of studying graphic design and messaging. Campaign posters have popped up around the upper school space, and students are vying for the votes of their peers.
This year, students will elect four middle school representatives, two high school representatives, a vice president, and a president. We will hold the election on Tuesday, September 7th, and all are looking forward to the outcome! It looks to be an active year for Summit’s Student Council – no matter who is chosen.
Middle School Discussions
Continuing on the theme of power, students in middle school viewed the short but helpful TEDed video on power this week. We’ve used it to frame our discussions of history, as it all goes back to the striving for power. As part of their viewing, students were asked to practice critical note-taking, which led to a rich discussion about the content and components of power and the way it grows. We concluded with the Thomas Burke quotation, “Power of all kinds has an irresistible propensity to increase itself.”
Sixth grade took this learning deeper by beginning a project to create art around the topic of power. While some are writing original poems, others are designing posters that convey power to an audience.
