Social Studies Update

Social Studies

High school students completed their first research and presentation project in Political Science in the week prior to fall break. Each student selected a country of interest and studied the government structure in detail. As part of this presentation, students came to a greater understanding of the United States’s government structure. This will benefit them as they continue to work their way through the Constitution. Their next big project is related to 21st century politics and policies, which will culminate in a persuasive essay.

Middle school students have completed their second assessment of the year, covering Europe in the middle ages and into the early Renaissance. Prior to fall break, they learned the stories of Martin Luther, King Henry the VIII, and Christopher Columbus. Upon return from break, these students will begin learning how the world continued to “shrink” with the Columbian Exchange and Protestantism. They will also begin to explore the reasons for Columbus’s voyage, which will lead them to understand in greater detail the strength and importance of the Mongol, Islamic, and Chinese empires.

Student Council

Student Council members meet each Tuesday during the lunch hour to further their progress in improving the Summit’s Upper School program. High school students are primarily focused on a project to create a Summit flag and are working with Ms. Maas to meet with the appropriate community members in designing a flag with meaning.

History Bowl

The Summit has been invited to participate in the January History Bowl event. Several middle school students have expressed interest, and information regarding meeting times to study will be shared soon. Topics for this year’s history bowl are: 20th Century, Space Race, WWII Eastern Front, American West, Industrial Revolution, MLB History, World Capitals, The American Revolution, Ancient Mesopotamia, Reconstruction, Colonial America 1600-1750, World War I, and Roman Empire.
