Hola todos!
Next week, we will be celebrating and exploring the popular Mexican holiday, El día de los muertos. This holiday centers around families and friends remembering and celebrating the lives of their loved ones who have passed away. Students will learn about the history, traditions, and significance of this multi-day celebration that takes place on November 1st and 2nd.
One important element of Day of the Dead is the ofrenda. Ofrendas are objects displayed on altares (altars) that are traditionally composed of four “levels” representing air, water, earth and sky. They are used to honor, celebrate, commemorate, or reflect the personality of a deceased relative. Contemporary altars and their ofrendas can be much more creative and flexible. In honor of Day of the Dead, The Summit would like to celebrate this culturally rich holiday by inviting the community to participate in an optional all-school ofrenda, which will be displayed in and around the front desk area of the school. Students may bring things in anytime between Thursday, October 29th and Tuesday, November 2nd. Señora Leighninger or Señorita Farley will be in the front lobby during morning carline to help students place their items.
Ways you can participate in the all-school ofrenda (altar):
- Bring in any of the following:
- a photo of a remembered loved one(s)
- Favorite sweets, foods or drink of the loved one(s) (preferably packaged items that won’t spoil)
- Flowers or yellow marigolds (fresh or fake)
- Items the loved one enjoyed, collected, or used for hobbies (books, baseball cards, yarn, coffee mug, paint brush, etc.)
