Last week, middle school took their assessment over our October Edgar Allan Poe unit. 6th grade focused on his biography and works such as “The Raven” and “The Tell-Tale Heart.” 7th/8th expanded on this and assessed their knowledge of “The Masque of the Red Death.” All in all, the students did well and should be proud of the work they’ve done and the knowledge they’ve gained. Poe’s work isn’t easy and they’ve handled it very well. High School continued with Poe’s work by reading “The Fall of the House of Usher” which is arguably his most famous short story. They will have their assessment later this week.
Upon completion of the assessment, Middle School transitioned into creating their final projects for the Poe unit; Board Games! Students were allowed to work in groups of no more than three to create the next board game sensation based upon the life and works of this incredible author. They’ve worked diligently over the last few class periods and will be presenting them this week via a game day where their classmates will get to play the games they have created. I’ve seen some really creative approaches to this project and am so excited to see where it ends up on presentation day.
7th and 8th grade will take a brief departure from Poe to celebrate “Dia de los Muertos” on Nov. 2nd, by reading a short story celebrating this cultural holiday and discussing it’s significance to literature and culture.
Upon completion of the Poe unit, we will be moving on to our first novels of the year which we can hopefully finish before the end of the semester which is fast approaching!
