Sixth Grade
Sixth grade students are curious and engaged learners. As they diligently explore topics in world history, many for the first time, they are learning to make connections and see significance. Over the past several days, students have been continuing to practice their research skills through an examination of the Ottoman Empire and the Italian Renaissance.
Seventh/Eighth Grade
Students in this middle school class welcomed a guest speaker on Monday, November 8th. Dr. David Dalton, professor of American history at College of the Ozarks, visited the classroom to share with students about the Salem witch trials and other historical, relevant topics. He even taught them a new game to illustrate the paranoia evident throughout this major American event. Students were engaged during this time, asking questions and seeking clarification. They were grateful that he took the time to share with them.
Political Science
After successful presentations on comparative governments, high school students have refocused on their argumentative research papers on 21st century issues in American politics. McKenzie Mitchell, a sophomore political science major at MSU and FunZone team member at The Summit, has volunteered her time on Thursdays to meet with students, discuss their topics, and provide tips on thesis creation, paper organization, and academic research and writing.
Last week, students completed research projects on the Bill of Rights and incorporation doctrine. After learning about the amendment randomly selected for them, students researched related Supreme Court cases and presented to classmates on the relevance of each.
