6th Grade
How many leaves would it take to cover the basketball court? What would the gas cost to travel the border of the contiguous United States? These questions are just a couple of the BIG questions sixth graders asked as we closed out our unit on ratios, rates, and percentages. It’s amazing to see them break apart a seemingly insurmountable task. I can’t wait to learn the answers!
Algebra
Algebra students are tackling systems of equations with logic and perseverance. Though we may not say, “I solve systems of equations on a daily basis as part of my everyday life,” we use reasoning like this frequently. Most situations in life are complicated and have more than one set of requirements or constraints. Systems of equations allow us to quantify complex situations.
Integrated Math
Measure the huge trees in the backyard? Impossible! Math makes it possible. Integrated Math students used shadows for indirect measurement. They loved realizing that they could measure a giant tree as easily as they could measure their own shadow. Now we have moved onto our unit on equations. Equations allow students to translate real-life situations into mathematical statements. It’s like learning a universal language!
