Social Studies Update

Sixth Grade

Sixth grade students have begun a study on Eastern Asia in the 16th and 17th centuries. This includes an examination of the Ming and Qing dynasties in China and the Tokugawa Era of Japan. Essential to this study is an understanding of Confucianism and its history in east Asia, and students had great questions about this topic today.

Sixth grade students also had their first field trip of the year! The group went to the Library Center with the fifth grade class and completed a research scavenger hunt. They worked together beautifully and were very efficient in their use of time, utilizing the library catalog, checking in with librarians, and following signage throughout the building. They used the rest of their time to check out books, explore other aspects of the library, and were fantastic library patrons throughout the trip.

Seventh & Eighth Grade

Seventh and eighth grade students have been preparing for an assessment this week. We wrapped up our study of the Age of Exploration, connecting it to events of the Reformation in Europe. Students began their assessment today and will finish it on Monday. This quiz provided them with deep-thinking questions, asking them to apply their knowledge of the subject matter and primary sources in a thorough, thoughtful way.

High School

High school students in the political science class all turned in their final drafts of their culminating semester project on Wednesday and cheered with joy. They showed diligence throughout this project, having to exercise research, writing, and time management skills. Collectively, their research shows a well-rounded understanding of major political issues in the 21st century.

This group is marching on through their college syllabus and studying the federal government (checks and balances, the roles of the three branches, etc.) as well as the cultural foundations of American democracy – especially through civil liberties and civil rights. This will take our group through the various stages of protest to bring civil rights to all Americans, and we’ll examine the ways different movements proved successful.
