Middle School Social Studies Update

Happy Monday!

Sixth grade students jumped back in to their architecture research and essay writing today. We spent time last week discussing how to compile research into an argumentative, formal essay, and students continue to practice and hone this skill. We’ve had great discussions about how to decide on a thesis statement and how to begin the process of writing. These essays are due next Monday, so students will continue to have time this week to seek feedback from their peers and teacher.

Seventh and eighth grade students showed their flexibility last week. They are researching architectural structures, deciding on their method presentation for those projects. In addition to this, we began another research project, this time examining people and events in the 17th and 18th centuries. Students, working solo or in groups of two, have chosen their topics, and they’re using their resources to understand more fully. I’ve enjoyed seeing them utilize the classroom library and poring over the details. It’s just different when they choose to use books. 🙂 They are, of course, also using more 21st century resources, such as YouTube videos and websites. They continue to hone their ability to identify strong sources for historical information.

In addition to these projects, seventh and eighth grade students have spent time learning of various competition options available, including History Day and Law Day. We will continue to touch base on these opportunities throughout the semester.
