A major theme of eighth grade advisory time is careers and preparation for the future. Students have begun the process of choosing careers of interest and researching what it takes to be successful in various areas, including educational choices and requirements, costs, work/life balance, and future salary projections. This research will culminate in a spring job shadowing experience off campus, during which students have the opportunity to learn more deeply and make connections in their chosen field.
This week, we’re practicing interview skills. Although practicing a perfect handshake is out of the question for the time being, we can still focus on good posture, eye contact, and clear responses to questions. Largely improvisation at this point in their lives, practice interviews are still a wonderful opportunity for middle school students to practice strong communication skills.
