After breaks and snow days, we were able to bring some of our long terms units to fruition in Language Arts.
6th grade turned in and presented their final poem based on their identities. They ranged from the heartfelt to the playful, and from the literal to the abstract. All were entertaining and I felt like I knew more about each of them as a result. I was impressed by their skill and I intend to submit them as a single work, representative of 6th grade, to LAD Fair.
7th/8th grade did great work on their final, differentiated projects for “Fahrenheit 451.” Some chose to do a book trailer; a video, similar to a movie trailer, that highlights the major events and themes of the book. Some chose a soundtrack project where they chose at least 10 songs and had to write about why they were chosen, which event they reflect, and why they are a good fit. Others chose to do a journal for the protagonist, detailing what happens immediately after the events of the novel. Whatever they chose, they were able to play to their strengths and produce some truly exciting work!
Middle School will begin their final push toward LAD Fair this week. They will be reviewing and revising their work and preparing them for submission after Spring Break. I am very excited to showcase their skills to the larger community and they are too!
High School continues their work on “Passing.” This book has sparked some really great discussions about racial politics, privilege, injustice, empathy, and inclusion. The students have had great insight into their community and the world at large. As the story of Irene and Clare intensifies, no doubt more connections to the larger world will be made.
