This Week in 4th Grade: 10/27–10/31

Math:
This week, we continued practicing multi-digit multiplication as we planned out our resort projects. Students have been calculating essential hotel room items, determining how many are needed for each room, and figuring out the total cost to purchase them. We’ll wrap up this project next week! In their free time, students have enjoyed creating maps and drawings of their resorts to bring their ideas to life.

Reading:
We finished The Westing Game! Students solved the mystery and took their end-of-book test today. We celebrated finishing the novel by discussing our favorite twists, surprises, and characters. Students shared how their predictions changed throughout the story and reflected on the lessons the characters learned. It’s been exciting to see their critical thinking skills shine as they uncovered clues and made connections throughout the story.

Writing:
Students continued working on their Google Slides for their ocean animal presentations. They have also been revising and editing their rough drafts, focusing on C.U.P.S. (capitalization, usage, punctuation, and spelling) to make their writing shine.

Grammar:
This week, we talked about homophones. Words that sound alike but have different meanings or spellings. Students practiced identifying and using pairs like there/their/they’re and to/too/two in sentences. We played interactive games and completed fun sorting activities to help reinforce the correct usage of these tricky word pairs in everyday writing.

Science:
We learned about the Great Barrier Reef and the threats it faces. Students explored how scientists restore coral reefs by propagating and growing new coral to replant, and how they’re adapting coral to withstand warmer waters. In addition, students learned about symbiotic relationships, including mutualism, and how different species interact and benefit from one another in the ocean.
