Social Studies Update

American History II

High school students progressed from their World War II research and presentations to an examination and discussion of the Holocaust. Additionally, they studied a variety of other moments and groups that contributed to the Allies’ success in World War II. As part of their learning, students worked on an assignment in which they journaled on a variety of oral histories shared by survivors of the Holocaust and Japanese internment, by women who worked as “Rosies” on the home front, and by veterans of the war. After listening to several stories, students debriefed as a class and shared their learning. We also took time to consider and discuss the challenges and potential pitfalls of oral histories.

Currently, students are beginning their study of the Cold War. This topic spans multiple decades and major events, in the US and abroad. Students continue to exhibit strong critical thinking skills as they ask key questions to understand the factors at play. Through the course of our study, we’ll continue to utilize primary sources to support our learning.

History Bowl

Two teams of amazing high school students competed in this year’s History Bowl event. The competition was delayed by about a month due to weather, but these people persevered in their study of history and really did an exceptional job (against all the large schools in our area!). I so appreciate their leadership and kindness, as well as their growth mindset related to learning. Thank you, also, to the parents who supported by chaperoning, driving, and providing snacks. We couldn’t do these cool things without you!
