Animal Farm’s Pigs and Propaganda

Students submitted their Animal Farm character presentations and journal entries written from a character’s perspective. It was interesting to hear how each character was described and considered to be round or flat, static or dynamic.

Now, we will be getting more critical as we analyze Squealer’s propaganda and find instances of such tools in our past and present. Upcoming projects revolving around the concepts of propaganda and social manipulation will require in-depth research, analysis, creativity, and writing.

To engage with your student, you could ask them:

  • their general opinion of the book and its message;
  • their attitude toward Squealer; and
  • parallels between Squealer’s motivations and moments in the U.S. and/or global history and present-day affairs.
