Mrs. Stroup is an Upper-School teacher at The Summit. She also happens to be a parent to one of our Kindergarten scholars! She visited our classroom yesterday to help us further explore our science study of forces and motion. Here are some vocabulary terms you should be able to discuss with your scholar:
- Force: a push or pull upon an object
- Gravity: a force that pulls objects toward each other (ex: the Earth’s gravity pulls objects toward it, keeping us from floating around!)
- Mrs. Stroup explained that even our own bodies have gravity! We just don’t notice it because the Earth’s gravity is so much stronger.
- Friction: occurs when objects touch or rub together
- Hypothesis: a prediction of what will happen during an experiment; must include the reasoning for your prediction
The experiment required a ramp, timer, and a car. We timed how long it took the car to travel down the ramp on each side (one bumpy side, one smooth side). We also tested the ramp at two different inclines! We are going to analyze our data on Thursday – although we’re already pretty sure our predictions were correct! Here are a few pictures of the experiment in progress.
