Is that number greater or less than the other? This is one of the ways numbers are being compared in our classroom. Kindergarteners have practiced using greater than, less than, and equal to symbols with the help of an alligator to determine the correct symbol. Practice, manipulatives, BrainPOP, and center activities help build mathematical vocabulary as well as conceptual understanding.
Before students know how to count, they are able to tell you which of two sets has more without counting. Their sense of magnitude is apparent early on. Using one-to-one correspondence, students say one number for each object counted. Students also build understanding of hierarchical inclusion; numbers build by exactly one each time… smaller numbers are part of bigger numbers. Determining which number or set is greater/lesser demonstrates an understanding of these important number sense concepts.
