Can I have a…

Kindergarten students have been learning how to express their opinions through writing and how to persuade others. To start off each writing piece, we create brainstorming webs where they write down their thoughts and ideas. At the beginning of this unit, we discussed some of their favorite things and the reasons why they liked those things. Each student had a wide range of opinions on various topics. However, we later transitioned to a more specific prompt, which was “Can I have a…”. In this prompt, each student had to think of something they wanted and then come up with two or three reasons to support their choice. It can be quite easy for young students to determine things they want, but it is more challenging for them to explain why they want them. Through mini-lessons and continued guided practice, the students were able to avoid simple answers and attempt to use more detail to explain their opinions. The kindergarteners have been very persuasive, and they have even changed many opinions in the class. This unit has been a fun way to explore their opinions and develop their writing skills!
