Middle School Mathematics

Math Fundamentals – Polygons, parallelograms, triangles… Sixth graders can handle them all! A solid understanding of the area of polygons will be the key to success in finding the surface area of three-dimensional figures. Students will be able to apply their skills to our first project, designing a tent.

Integrated Math – Students have been exploring the effects of translations, reflections, and rotations. Through a variety of tasks, students developed rules for how to change the coordinates of a transformed figure without having to draw the figure first on a grid. They also discovered that rigid transformations retain their length and angle measurements. In doing so, they experienced how to go about proving things to be true mathematically, rather than trusting their instincts exclusively.

Algebra 1 – What do mean, MAD, median, IQR, skewed left, uniform, skewed right, symmetric all mean and how are they used in contextualized situations? This is what students have been studying. They first created data sets to match certain requirements and then matched data sets with their statistics. Finally they are answering questions related to these statistics in situations to see how they are valuable tools for data analysis.

Geometry – Constructions and transformations have been the focus for Geometry. Students will use these concepts as evidence in their first proofs to wrap up our unit. Finally, students will complete a short project utilizing constructions and transformations to create a design and write instructions for others to recreate it.
