Middle School Mathematics

Math Fundamentals – Sixth grade students reviewed one-step equations and completed a knowledge check. Then we revisited operations with integers (positive and negative whole numbers). These concepts will be key to success in seventh grade math, so students will have many opportunities to practice to ensure a clear understanding.

Integrated Math – Students are working on a unit about volume and surface area of prisms, cylinders, and cones. They are reasoning about prisms and composite figures and will use this information to discover the formulas for volume and surface area of cylinder and cones in the upcoming week.

Algebra 1 – Students continued to work with factoring quadratic equations, learning new methods that work when the quadratic term has a coefficient that is not 1. They have been practicing to discover which method makes the most sense to them from reverse FOILing, the box method, the diamond method, and slide and divide. Students are becoming more efficient as they put in the work to practice factoring many different quadratic equations.

Geometry – This week students demonstrated their understanding of parabolas and circles. More specifically, they used the Pythagorean theorem and the characteristics of parabolas and circles to derive equations. They also used equations to determine key characteristics of the figures they represent.
