Poetry in Language Arts

Happy New Year! Middle School began this year with a study of poetry leading up to their participation in LAD Fair later in the spring. They began last week with learning the names of different types of stanzas of poetry. This week, they will learn different literary terms and devices as they relate to the construction of poetry. We will then analyze some examples of famous poetry so that they can practice finding what they’ve learned within different poetic styles. Poetry can be intimidating for young writers, so it is my hope that, by giving them the building blocks of poetry, they will be more apt to trust what they know when the time comes to write their own.
