Math Fundamentals
Sixth grade mathematicians are living in the world of algebra. We wrapped up the first piece of our unit with a Knowledge Check on solving one-step addition and multiplication equations. Now we are focusing on the meaning of equivalence as we write equations and expressions.
Integrated Math
Integrated math students have moved into a study of solid figures in conjunction with their study of topography in science. They have explored different shapes than can be made by creating cross-sections of prisms, cones, spheres, cylinders, and pyramids by making three dimensional shapes from play dough and then cutting them and observing the cut side’s shape. Using this information they will build a mathematical representation of volume in the coming week.
Foundations for Algebra
Students completed a Knowledge Check assessing their ability to represent linear relationships with graphs, equations, and tables. Interpreting slope and the vertical intercept in the context of the situation was the major takeaway. Now we take that and further investigate slope and solving for unknown values in these situations.
Algebra I
The focus this week has been on exponential decay and growth. Students began with a paper folding lab, where they made observations about both the number of sections created with new folds as well as the area in relationship to the starting area when folded. With this knowledge they were able to develop equations for exponential growth and decay. They then expanded and applied this knowledge to situations involving percent growth and decay via a series of word problems in Desmos. They will continue working with exponential equations into next week.
