This Week in Language Arts

6th grade had a rough draft of their research papers completed and used writer’s workshop today to help get some feedback from other writers. They will spend the next couple of days revising and learning how to format a paper properly in MLA formatting. We will also learn about conclusions as these often prove to be one of the toughest aspects of research writing for student writers.

7th grade, having finished “The Outsiders,” were assigned their final project. They had several options to choose from so they’ll be able to play to their strengths and choose a path that they will enjoy. They enjoyed the classic novel  and, I’m sure, will turn in fantastic final projects to present.

8th grade began their journey into the poetic and metaphorical mind of Ray Bradbury this week with his masterpiece “Fahrenheit 451.” This classic tale of a dystopian future where reading is not only banned, but books are actively burned by firemen whose hoses spit kerosene instead of water. The protagonist, after having the realization that he is on the wrong path, makes enemies of both family and friends in his attempt to change the world for the better and make books safe for everyone. Bradbury was very prescient in this novel having predicted earbuds (or, as he calls them, seashells) and arthroscopic surgery among other modern marvels of which no once could have conceived at the time the book was written.
