Math Fundamentals

Our sixth-grade students are wrapping up their unit on proportional relationships. They’ve learned that when two quantities are related by multiplication, they’re proportional. From constant speeds to unit prices, they’ve tackled common proportional scenarios with gusto.  Next week, students will demonstrate their ability to represent proportional relationships with equations and graphs, and interpret these representations.

Integrated Math

Integrated math students are working on a unit about inequalities. When this unit opened, students experimented with a Desmos activity where they tried to correctly direct a sheet to eat all the grass possible without falling into the water by writing inequalities. This was met with difficulty, confusion, and a certain amount of frustration. Since then, their knowledge has grown tremendously, to the point where students are directing, encouraging, and teaching each other what to do when they encounter inequalities that require one, two, or many steps in order to solve. Their growth mindset and persistence over this past week has been a joy to watch.

Foundations for Algebra

Our Foundations for Algebra students have been immersed in the fascinating world of functions. They’ve been mastering the concept that a function entails exactly one output for every input. Using graphs, tables, and equations, students have been analyzing various situations. Next week, they will put their understanding to the test with an assessment.

Algebra I

Algebra 1 students are deep into a study of quadratic functions. Students have learned about the three main forms that quadratic functions can be expressed in: standard, factored, and vertex. They reflected on how to go from one form to the next, as well as how to use the different equations in order to graph quadratic functions. Each form can provide different pieces of information. Now, students are working on solving quadratic equations using reasoning and/or the zero product property.
