Middle School Science and STEM Update

6th Grade Ecology
Students are practicing making estimates of large and small quantities using powers of 10. The questions we are tackling are called “Fermi Questions” and require students to use their number sense to make estimates of things like the number of plants in the backyard of the school. We will continue to use data and basic math throughout the course, so it is important to get comfortable with numbers and scale.

7th/8th Grade Physical Science
Students are learning about the metric system and how to do unit conversions. These conversions can be challenging, so we are laying down a framework students can use throughout their time in school, utilizing the powers of 10 that correspond to the prefixes used in the metric system.

STEM
Students are starting off the semester by building their own catapults. Later, once we have completed these models, we will attempt to build a larger siege engine known as a trebuchet. We will use this in our physical science class to calculate velocity and force!
