Between snow days and school activities, we have pivoted to focus on fundamentals and work on long-term projects before moving into our next summative writing assignment.
SIXTH AND SEVENTH GRADES: Students have been practicing sentence and paragraph structures. We have discussed different types of sentences and clauses; various reasons and rules for commas and semicolons; and why these details matter. We also did exercises to organize sentences within a paragraph. We’ve reviewed summarizing and citations, as well, as both will be necessary for upcoming assignments and projects in many of their classes.
EIGHTH GRADE: We have discussed various types of sources for research as well as issues – local and national – they care about and may choose to research more about in the future.
Students should be working on their book report/presentation; this means they are either reading their novel or have moved to producing the project. While we have had some class time to work on this, most of this should be completed outside of class.
To engage with your student, you could ask them:
- what social issues they are interested in;
- what book they are reading for their first book report; and/or
- what LAD Fair categories they have completed their entries for.
