Analyzing Examples

SIXTH AND SEVENTH GRADE: We reviewed examples of strong and weak book reports while discussing what made one model more successful than the other; hopefully, students will be able to model this when writing their own book reports for next week. We also played a game to review grammar, mechanics, and spelling for possessives, plurals, proper nouns, and more.

EIGHTH GRADE: In addition to analyzing examples of strong and weak book reports, we also tested our creative prowess with a game focused on writing a short story as our next writing project (other than the book report) will be a creative writing endeavor.

To engage with your student, you could ask them:

  • what book they are reading for their first book report;
  • what LAD Fair categories they have completed their entries for;
  • what made the stronger model more successful than the weaker model; and
  • specifically for eighth grade: what their short story was about.
