It’s time to order NEW Summit Spirit Wear! This is a great way to show off your Summit spirit for students, parents, and grandparents. Spirit Wear may be worn every Friday with jeans (or khaki or navy pants/shorts/skirts) for Beginners-8th Grade, and Spirit Wear may be worn every day for High School Summit students.
Things are off to a strong start in the upper school. This week, social studies classes at The Summit have been engaged in discussions of where we begin our American history journey. Students have come up with fabulous answers and have led wonderful discussions on the matter. We’ve talked about Native Americans, the Vikings, and Christopher Columbus at some length. 6th grade has worked on biographies and autobiographies and has learned about non-verbal communication. 7th and 8th grade are launching into their first research assignment on the culture of indigenous Americans. High school has been digging into primary sources to understand the first moments of American history, and I’m looking forward to seeing them for their second class tomorrow.
Today was also our first Model United Nations class, engaging 6th through 8th grade. Mr. Powers, Mrs. Maddox, and Mrs. Smith are the teachers for this class period, and we really enjoyed visiting with students today about how we want to shape our MUN. We’re a small school, but we’re capable of big things, and the students were very on board to get MUN rolling at The Summit. After we learned what exactly MUN is, we talked about how we want it to function at our school, and students began choosing countries of interest. If you get a chance, ask your student what country they’re interested in learning more about – and why. I’m so excited to see the connections made between social studies, geography, language arts, science, math, art, music, and Spanish. We were too busy discussing today for any photos to be taken, but we’ll try to snap more in future classes.
