In preparation for last Wednesday’s trip to the Library Station and Friends of the Library Book Sale, middle school Language Arts students explored a reading resource called Good Reads. The website allows students to create accounts and select favorite genres, set reading goals, rate and review books, and get suggestions for future independent reads. They also have access to reading lists based on level and interest. Students used the site to create “want to read” lists, which helped to guide checkout and purchases during the literacy trip. Many students were excited to find books on their lists at the sale for just $1 each. Several volunteer workers remarked on how meaningful it was to see students so excited about reading.
A mid-morning stop at Panera allowed students to practice the soft skills required to order and dine at a restaurant. The staff there commented that Summit students were among the most respectful they had served. Our many opportunities to learn off campus are possible because of our students’ commitment to respectful conduct in the community.
