We have been studying squares and sqaure roots, making the connection between the areas of squares and the lengths of their sides. We have also analyzed what integers non-perfect square-roots would fall between. We have used the coordinate system to build squares and triangles to find the area of the square of a segment length. By building bigger squares and subtracting out smaller triangles that surround the desired square, we were able to prove Pythagorean theorem. We now use the Pythagorean theorem to find segment lengths instead of using the “building bigger squares” method. Secondly, we have started to introduce cube roots, their notation, meanings, approximations, and their solutions of equations.
ELA Week 4: Stories about the power of and in communities
For sixth and seventh grade students, we are completing our reading of nine, ten: A September 11 story. Mid-week, we thought about the purpose each
