Middle School Mathematics

Math Fundamentals – Decimals show up everywhere! Even in whole numbers there is a decimal at the end. Sixth graders are working with adding, subtracting, and multiplying decimals. Next week we will be working on division as well. Place value is so important in this work! There is a big difference between $12 and $0.12.

Integrated Math – Integrated Math students have been reviewing operations with integers. Remembering that viewing subtraction as “adding the opposite” when there are negative numbers has been both helpful and challenging. This knowledge is going to be used to continue work with equations.

Algebra I – Algebra 1 students are expanding their knowledge of functions by analyzing and creating graphs of functions. They began by noting important features of graphs including intercepts, maximums, minimums, and turning points. This was followed by an exploration of average rate of change. This knowledge will be used to compare graphs and determine domain and range.

Geometry – Students have been working on applying sine, cosine, and tangent as well as their reciprocal functions arcsine, arccosine, and arctangent. Using these functions allows students to find unknown side and angle measurements in right triangles. Our next unit will focus on the geometry of solids (3D figures).
