This Week in Language Arts

Middle School is finishing out the semester strong by covering some staples of the short story universe.

6th grade read the classic “Be Careful What You Wish For” story, “The Monkey’s Paw” and the classic Ray Bradbury story “All Summer in a Day” which critiques the ideas of disliking someone because they happen to be different and the consequences of bullying.

7th grade read two Bradbury works; “The Veldt” and “There Will Come Soft Rains,” both about the calamities of a future plagued by inverse ideology and catastrophic events.

8th Grade read the beloved Kurt Vonnegut story “Harrison Bergeron” a dystopian story set in a future where “equality” is the standard and the problems that arrive when personal freedoms are impinged upon by a tyrannical government. They will be creating their own perfect society this week as they work together to come up with their version of a society flush with equity and free from judgement. Time will tell what these “perfect” societies will look like.
