6th Grade
6th grade had their first math test this week which focused on previously learned topics from their 5th grade year to help me and them gauge where their weak points may be for the future lessons we have coming up. This will be their most comprehensive test of the school year being that it focuses on a variety of topics such as rounding, inequalities, different types of fractions, mean, median, mode, etc. and properties of triangles. After discussion on Monday, I decided to allow them to use a notecard on the test only if their entire class remembered to bring it, emphasizing that it was just as much a trial of preparation as it was responsibility. They were successful in this and overall, their testing has gone well outside of needing to be spread across two class periods.
7th Grade
Much in the same vein as 6th grade, the 7th graders (or just the Middle School Math class as I’ve begun to call it) had a review test to see what they retained from the previous year. They needed an extra day to prepare as they didn’t quite feel ready on Tuesday with their study guide. I also allowed them to use a notecard in an attempt to achieve fairness as every other class was allotted one for their first test. Their test concerned ratios, greatest and least common multiples, development of a number line, knowing and using GEMS or PEMDAS substitution of numbers and even a bit of geometry concerning circles, triangles and perimeter.
