Seventh Grade Field Trip – Air Power History Tour

Today, thanks to a generous donor, seventh grade students had the incredible opportunity to take a field trip to the Springfield-Branson Airport to see the Air Power History Tour, which included the opportunities to view and experience a B-29 (FIFI), a AT-6 (Nella), and a PT-13 Stearman. Each plane had an expert guide who informed our group of its significance to the war effort, as well as its various technological advancements and abilities. Students were able to crawl around inside the B-29 and then sit in the cockpit of the AT-6, as well as to manipulate the controls of the Stearman. Upon arrival to the airport, each student was given a small airplane pin to act as a “challenge coin” to give to one of the veterans operating the tour. As their history teacher, it was such a joyful experience to see them interact with these historic artifacts and the kind, knowledgeable folks who operate this tour! I loved seeing their enthusiasm throughout this fabulous field trip. As a very special added bonus, we ran into a Summit alum who is famous for having earned her pilot’s license prior to her driver’s license, and the students were so excited to meet her and learn of her experience with flight.
