Getting Creative to Analyze Short Stories in ELA

This week, students have chosen a short story to do a creative project about, electing to either recreate a scene with some sort of visual art, design/illustrate cover art, or rewrite the ending/write a second-chapter to the story. Regardless of which story or creative option your student chose, all projects have two writing components: one that requires the use of figurative language and one in which students analyze and explain their artistic choices. In doing so, students are practicing analyzing the story’s plot, symbols, mood/tone, and theme. Students will present their project to their classmates on Thursday/Friday.

To engage with your student, you could ask them:

  • what short story they are doing their project on,
  • which project option they chose,
  • what their favorite/least favorite short story has been and why.
