Reading

Students are reading many books this week, and reading folders continue to be a favorite activity as students work with the teacher to select level appropriate books.  While working in their reading folders, students are also doing word work activities.  This week we are hunting for long a words, specifically those with a silent e or “magic e” that makes the a say it’s name.  On Friday, we’ll make a group list of all of the long a words we have found.

Students are also reading fiction and nonfiction content related books this week including City Places, City Animals, and Places People Live.  Throughout each of the books, students are making predictions, identifying the main idea and details, and making text to self connections.  Again, word work is incorporated as students preview beginning blends spelling patterns.  We will work more directly with blends throughout the second trimester.

Grammatical skills are reinforced as students find, nouns, verbs, and adjectives in their books.  They especially enjoy watching the School House Rock Grammar Rocks videos on these parts of speech.
