After completing a few brief assessments, first graders were ready to begin reviewing and expanding their knowledge of two dimensional shapes. Through The Greedy Triangle by Marilyn Burns, we discussed the properties of various shapes as well as where we find shapes in our everyday lives. In the story, the greedy triangle wanted more sides and more angles, and as it grew, students saw and talked about where the shape was seen. Mathematical vocabulary was introduced including the terms quadrilateral, pentagon, hexagon, heptagon, octagon, nonagon, and decagon.
