Adjectives

First graders have begun deepening their understanding of adjectives.  Beginning with a brief BrainPOP Jr. video, we reviewed that adjectives are words that describe nouns.  They make our writing more interesting, helping the reader to paint a more clear picture in his or her mind.  Students enjoyed viewing and listening to School House Rock’s Unpack Your Adjectives song.  We then generated a long list of adjectives.  Becoming word detectives, each child selected two adjectives from books in his or her reading folder.  They then wrote the adjective, wrote the noun it describes, and drew a picture of the two.  As we continue to work with adjectives, we will strive to increase the number of describing words we use in both oral and written language.  We will discuss how adjectives describe how something looks, smells, tastes, sounds, or feels.  We will discover that both numbers and colors can be adjectives, and that adjectives can occur in different parts of a sentence.
