Thomas Alva Edison is the next famous inventor first graders have been learning about.  We have shared numerous read aloud books, discussed his accomplishments, and tried to imagine what life would be like without his many inventions.  He has inspired us to ask lots of questions, experiment to try to find answers, work hard, and never stop trying new things.  Listed below are journal samples from some first grade students.

“Thomas Edison was a famous inventor. He invented the electric light.” T.J.

“Al experimented a lot. He was pretty curious. Al moved to Detroit.” M.M.

“Al loved science. Al loved building. Al never gave up.” B.T

“His teacher did not have patience with him.” D.B.

“He got married to a girl.  She was pretty.” M.B.

“He invented the phonograph.” W.J.

“His mom taught him. His mom was a teacher.” C.S.

“Thomas was a famous inventor and he invented printing (mimeograph).” I.G.
