Navajo

In learning about the Navajo of the southwest region, first grade enjoyed the shared read aloud, The Goat in the Rug.  In the book, Geraldine, the goat, tells the story of how Glenmae, a Navajo weaver created a rug.  First, Geraldine is clipped, and then her wool is spun into yarn.  Carefully, the yarn is woven on a loom to make a beautiful geometric rug.  After looking at pictures of navajo rugs, students enjoyed creating their own boldly colored rugs, complete with a watercolor wash.  In addition to weaving, key facets of the navajo tribe that first grade has discussed include: wearing deerskin clothing, using wheat to make fry bread, eating sheep meat, and living in circular earthen lodges called hogans.
