Ordinal Numbers

First grade students have learned that ordinal numbers tell the position of something in a list.  Working with ordinal numbers, students have been sequencing numbers and objects, writing and spelling ordinal number words correctly, and practicing directionality.  Centers over the past weeks have included activities asking students to cut, sort, paste, and match ordinal numbers, play games with ordinal numbers such as bingo, and complete problem solving activities.  Solving word problems with ordinal numbers was especially tricky as students had to practice reading steps carefully and accurately.  They were encouraged to apply problem solving strategies by drawing and labeling pictures.
