First grade students know that c and k can make the /k/ sound when they are separate and when they are together. Reading aloud Click, Clack, Moo Cows That Type, students were introduced to our next spelling pattern, final -ck. We learned when you hear the /k/ sound after a short vowel in a one-syllable word, it is usually spelled with -ck. We found the following words in our book that fit this spelling pattern: click, clack, back, duck, knock, and quack.
