Dog Safety Presentation

It was a busy start to the week in first grade with the highlight being a dog safety presentation.   In preparation for Ranch Day, and our visit from author John Erickson, former educator and Summit board member Susan Miranti and her dog McGee visited the school.  Presenting to first and second graders, Mrs. Miranti and McGee modeled key safety measures.  Students practiced asking permission to pet someone’s dog, greeting a dog safely, feeding a dog a treat correctly, and responding appropriately when encountering an unknown dog.  They learned to freeze, stand like a tree, and avoid eye contact if an unfamiliar dog is running toward them. They learned to tuck like a turtle should an unfamiliar dog jump up at them.  After the presentation, student were encouraged to record their new learning in the journals.
