Beginning Blends

Today, first grade students began working with beginning blends.  Beginning blends consist of two or more consonants at the beginning of a word.  Together, they make a sound in which each letter is heard.  This week, we will focus on the following l-blends: bl, cl, fl, gl, pl, and sl.  Introducing beginning l-blends, students enjoyed a shared read aloud of Click Clack, Moo Cows That Type by Doreen Cronin.   In addition to nightly spelling practice with l-blend words, ask your child to identify beginning blends in words he or she hears, reads, and writes.
