Special Events

First grade students participated in several special events this week including S.T.E.A.M. with Mr. Powers, gardening with the 5th grade, and story time with Pete the Cat.

S.T.E.A.M. with Mr. Powers

This Thursday, students participated in their first STEAM class with Mr. Powers.  As listed on the schedule, we will have weekly 45 minute sessions.  In our first meeting, students reviewed the acronym S.T.E.A.M. discussing each what each Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math mean and how they work together.  Mr. Powers also led a discussion as we debriefed on the solar eclipse.  Finally, students completed a toothpick S.T.E.A.M. challenge.  Working in pairs, students were tasked with building the tallest possible structure using a small amount of play-dough and 20 toothpicks.

Gardening with 5th Grade

This week, first grade students joined fifth grade students on the patio assisting in further planning, weeding and planting our gardens.  Students observed items already growing including cilantro, garlic, garlic chives, sage, and dill.  Working with fifth grade buddies, students planted potatoes, carrots, radishes, and kale.  Throughout the trimester we will deepen our understanding or our science topic of natural resources and conservation as we connect our learning to our school garden.  Students can look forward to periodically partnering with fifth grade, to cultivate and maintain the garden.

Pete the Cat

Today, first grade students enjoyed a visit from a favorite literary character, Pete the Cat.  During the visit Pete’s friend read aloud Pete the Cat Rocking in My School Shoes and Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons.  After the visit, we enjoyed sharing a variety of Pete the Cat stories we have in our classroom library.
