Peter Brown – Author Study

Moving onto our second author study of the year, students have been introduced to author and illustrator Peter Brown.  Launching our study a few weeks back, we shared The Curious Garden.  In the story, Liam, a curious boy begins exploring his dreary city.  When he comes across a struggling garden, he decides to help the plants grow.  Slowly, over time, the garden begins to expand, transforming the city into a beautiful green world.  Liam serves as an example of how one small boy can make a difference in his world, a message we will continue to reinforce this school year.  Using the story as inspiration, we have periodically returned to our own patio garden weeding small sections, harvesting vegetables and herbs, and adding to the compost bin.  Having just wrapped up our first chapter book of the year, Mrs. Piggle Wiggle, first and second graders are partnering together to read, The Wild Robot, by Peter Brown.  Today, students were eager to practice visualization, make predictions, and discuss new vocabulary.  We look forward to sharing this book as we learn together!
