Addition and Subtraction Strategies

First grade students are learning and applying a variety of addition and subtraction strategies as we begin working in-depth on addition and subtraction within 10.  Strategies practiced thus far include zero facts (+0, -0), counting on (+1, +2, +3), and counting back (-1, -2, -3).  Students are playing games, working with manipulatives, using visual models (number lines, ten frames, domino patterns, number bonds, etc.), solving story problems, and writing story problems.  Addition and subtraction strategies addressed in first grade are embedded below.  These will be taught and practiced throughout the remainder of the school year.
