Today, first grade students were introduced to our next author, Tomie dePaola. Kicking off our studies, we read aloud The Popcorn Book. In the story, brothers Tony and Tiny are hungry for a snack. As they begin making the popcorn, they learn about the history of popcorn in the Americas, how much popcorn is eaten, and methods of popping corn. We even connected our learning to our current social studies topic, discovering that the Iroquois people would pop popcorn using clay pots and hot sand. After reading, we learned a new math game, POP, to practice our doubles and doubles +1 facts. Then, we shared a popcorn snack. We look forward to reading more books by Tomie dePaola throughout the month of December.
