Vowel Teams

This week in spelling and word work, we are learning about vowel teams (also called vowel pairs or vowel digraphs).  Vowel teams are being introduced in the following order:  ea, ai, oa, ee, ay, and oe.  Working with vowel teams, we have reviewed the two vowels go walking rule which says, “When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking, and says its name.”  Learning the rule, we are also learning exceptions. First grade students are on the look out for words that break the rules, which will be recorded in our word jail.
