Ordinal Numbers

After concluding our geometry unit, First grade students have began learning about ordinal numbers. We learned that ordinal numbers tell the position of something in a list. Working with ordinal numbers, students have been sequencing numbers and objects, writing and spelling ordinal number words correctly, and practicing directionality. We have read two stories to expand our knowledge. “The Seven Blind Mice” and “Room on the Broom” have help us explore the written and numerical form of ordinal numbers, as well as practice our story sequencing skills. Centers over the next few weeks will include activities asking students to cut, sort, paste, and match ordinal numbers, play games with ordinal numbers such as bingo, and complete problem solving activities. Solving word problems with ordinal numbers can be especially tricky as students have to practice reading steps carefully and accurately. They will be encouraged to apply problem solving strategies by drawing and labeling pictures.
