We began our author study of author Nancy Carlson this week. Nancy Carlson writes books that teach children skills to cope with difference challenges such as overcoming anxieties, taking responsibility for their actions, having a positive attitude, saving money, and more. First graders learned a bit about Nancy Carlson before exploring some of her books. We read First Grade, Here I Come as a class and discussed the characters. Then, students chose their own Nancy Carlton book to read independently. Students considered if the illustrations, characters, and message of the book they chose were similar to or different from First Grade, Here I Come.
