Needs and Wants

First graders have recently been learning about the difference between needs and wants. We have discussed how a need is something you must have to be healthy and safe, and a want is something you would like to have but could live without.

Yesterday, we started by brainstorming a list of needs and wants that people might have. Some items are tricky, such as food. Healthy food is a need while unhealthy food can be a want. Same with clothes! Weather-appropriate clothes are a need while dress-up clothes are a want. Here is what the first graders came up with!

Needs: water, coat, healthy foods, plants, phone for emergencies, car, family, glasses, scarf, shoes, vegetables, a house, medicine

Wants: pets, puzzles, video games, iPads, donuts, toys, phone for playing, skateboard, dress-up clothes, cupcake, flowers, bike

Next, we read a story about the Berenstain Bears called Berenstain Bears Think of Those in Need. We discussed how some people don’t have everything they need, while others might have much more than they need. When it’s possible, it’s nice to share something you have plenty of in order to help someone else.

Today, first graders used magazine clippings to create collages of their needs and wants. Check out the images below to see some of the collages!
